H4CBD: Meet CBD's more potent little brother

A lot has already been said and written about CBD, its effects and health benefits, but another cannabinoid, the so-called H4CBD, is currently attracting a lot of attention. This substance is especially popular in connection with the soon ban of HHC in the Czech Republic, as it is said to be able to fully replace it. Read what H4CBD actually is and what makes this cannabinoid so unique.

What is H4CBD

The name H4CBD hides a synthetic cannabinoid, the full name of which is hexahydrocannabidiol, which is a hot new product on the market. H4CBD was derived from a natural cannabinoid and modified to acquire new properties. So it was not artificially created, but is a synthetic modification of a natural substance.

The cannabinoid H4CBD is created by adding 4 hydrogen atoms to the CBD molecule, and with this procedure you get the so-called fully hydrogenated form of CBD. The entire production process of H4CBD is therefore identical to the hydrogenation of vegetable oil, the final product of which is margarine.

H4CBD was first noticed by scientists in the mid-20th century during research into synthetic and semi-synthetic cannabinoids, but it's only now that it's starting to make a big splash, both scientifically and in the public eye. Its properties have not yet been widely researched, so we are not as well informed about them as, say, CBD.

Effects of H4CBD

Because it is a relatively new cannabinoid, its effects have not yet been fully mapped and many remain unknown. But in general, people who use H4CBD describe its effects as similar to CBD, but noticeably stronger, and they also experience psychoactive effects.

Therefore, due to the psychoactive action, it can be assumed that the effects of H4CBD will be better compared to HHC rather than CBD. When using it, you can experience an uplifting feeling, even euphoria, and a relaxing, relaxing effect. What we do know so far from available sources is that H4CBD (unlike CBD) binds strongly to CB1 neuroreceptors in the brain and results in these very psychoactive states.

Based on scientific research, studies and experiences of H4CBD users, at least some of the supposed effects of this cannabinoid on the human body can be mentioned:

pain relief,
anti-inflammatory effect,
alleviating stress and anxiety,
calming and inducing a feeling of relaxation,
mild mood swings,
mild changes in perception,
feelings of euphoria,
alleviation of the manifestations of autoimmune diseases (multiple sclerosis, lupus, Crohn's disease, etc.),
lowering blood pressure,
heart health support,
help with insomnia.
H4CBD vs. CBD, HHC and other cannabinoids

Cannabinoids are a group of substances originating from cannabis plants, of which more than 100 different species have been discovered so far. In this article, however, we will take a closer look at only four of them - the currently discussed H4CBD and the better-known CBD, THC and HHC.

And why did we choose these four cannabinoids for comparison? This is because there is a very similar relationship between them – HHC is a hydrogenated form of THC, and H4CBD was created by hydrogenating CBD.

Therefore, the origin of H4CBD and HHC is very similar, however, each of these substances is derived from different cannabinoids and therefore their effects on the body will also be different. The common denominator of these two substances are the already mentioned psychoactive effects, and since HHC will probably be completely banned by Czech legislation in the near future, H4CBD can be its worthy replacement.

Effect of H4CBD on the endocannabinoid system

In short, the endocannabinoid system regulates and is responsible for all processes that take place in the human body. I.e. for example, sleep, coordination of movements, growth, emotional management, etc. This system is equipped with many receptors located throughout the body, but only two types are usually mentioned in connection with cannabis - CB1 and CB2 receptors.

CB1 receptors are found in the brain and nerve endings. Those in the brain are responsible for memory, emotion processing, appetite control or perhaps stress management. CB1 receptors located in nerve endings in turn influence the sensation of pain.

CB2 receptors are found especially in the cells of the immune system, where they trigger the immune response to inflammation.

The highest concentration of cannabinoid receptors in the human body is found in the following locations:

central nervous system (brain),
liver,
reproductive system,
circulatory system,
digestive tract,
skin,
immune system.
Classic CBD interacts primarily with CB2 receptors, which is why it is often highlighted in the context of alleviating the manifestations of autoimmune diseases, rheumatism or other inflammations in the body. However, H4CBD also has an effect on CB1 receptors, which would explain the presence of psychoactive effects.

Is H4CBD really 100 times more effective than CBD?

CBD, which is modified to form H4CBD, therefore has very little affinity for the brain's CB1 receptors and can even reduce their activity. By adding four hydrogen atoms, this affinity is greatly increased, which is why you may find H4CBD reported to be up to 100 times more potent than its parent CBD. But this is particularly related to the effect on CB1 receptors.

Since CBD affects the CB1 receptors very little, a hundred times its effect on these receptors is not such a huge difference.

even when multiplied by a hundred, the result will still be small. However, it is still true that H4CBD is indeed more effective than CBD in certain areas, but the difference in their effects needs to be viewed more realistically. Ultimately, given the facts, it can be said that H4CBD is about 3 to 4 times stronger than CBD.

H4CBD from the point of view of Czech legislation

The good news for you is that H4CBD is not on the list of addictive substances. From the point of view of Czech laws, this is a completely legal substance at the moment.

From Act No. 167/1998 Coll. on addictive substances and Government Regulation No. 463/2013 Coll. it follows from the lists of addictive substances that the cultivation, import and sale of so-called technical cannabis is currently considered legal. According to the aforementioned laws, this means a registered variety that does not contain more than 1% THC. CBD, CBG, CBN and many other cannabinoids have not been and are not yet subject to regulation.

However, it is necessary to take into account the fact that there are many disputes regarding the legality of cannabinoids, which may result in their ban. Currently, the subject of debate is the planned ban or significant restriction of the sale of products containing CBD or HHC. Since H4CBD is a modification of CBD, it can be expected that this measure may also affect it in the future.

How to choose the best H4CBD

Products containing H4CBD, although they are relatively new, can already be found on the Czech market in many different forms - you can buy flowers, distillates, vape foams, cartridges, gummies and more. This makes it easy to choose H4CBD in the form that suits you best and in the concentration you need.

A big advantage of H4CBD products is their very low THC content - you'll usually find less than 0.2% psychoactive THC, some even less than 0.001% THC. Each of the above-mentioned products has its own specifics:

distillate - consists of H4CBD and hemp distillate from which other cannabinoids have been removed, purchased in various concentrations (up to 99%) and containing less than 0.001% THC,
vape pens and cartridges – discreet vaporizers suitable for traveling, the filling is a liquid with a volume of 1 ml with a content of up to 95% H4CBD and no THC content, the cartridges are spare refills for vape pens,
flowers - contain 30-60% H4CBD distillate and less than 0.2% THC,
gummies – gelatin candies containing H4CBD distillate, they are completely THC-free, and they also taste pleasant.
When choosing H4CBD, you should mainly follow your preferences regarding the type of product. As this cannabinoid continues to gain popularity and is subjected to numerous researches, we can expect the discovery of new uses and thus new products on the market.
